About Tell the Dam Truth

We are building a movement to compel governments and dam operators to tell the dam truth about the extreme negative impacts of dams, and to count and report the true climate impact of dams and reservoirs.

Who We Are

Tell The Dam Truth (TTDT) has applied for Section 501(c)(3) status with the IRS and is awaiting its determination letter.  TTDT has received initial funding and support from Patagonia.

TTDT fights the climate crisis by working to protect and restore free-flowing rivers. We believe that river ecosystem biodiversity and carbon sequestration are Nature’s Emergency Room that helps keep everything alive. Because dams can injure and kill rivers, TTDT works to include and address the impacts of river-destroying dams in all public decision-making around dam permitting, re-licensing, and decommissioning.

The initial thrust of TTDT is to support river-protection groups by engaging with federal and state agencies to make sure that the greenhouse gas emissions caused by dams and reservoirs are counted, reported, and then considered during policy making, rulemaking, and legislation.

The first initiative of TTDT was to file a legal petition with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency arguing that greenhouse gas emissions from dams and reservoirs be added to the EPA’s “Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program”. This action received the sign-on support of over 140 environmental groups and a few businesses.

Additional work has included further engagement with the EPA about its yearly GHG Inventory reported to the U.N. using IPCC guidelines. In the future, we will be engaging in initiatives listed under “Our Work” on this website. Each initiative may involve any number of environmental group and business partners and supporters.
