Hydropower False Carbon Credits

The vast majority of hydropower facilities emit greenhouse gases and make climate change worse. As such, hydropower should not be used as a "carbon credit", or a "carbon offset", or involved with a "cap and trade program". Greenwashing hydropower as "clean", "carbon free", or "zero emissions" is a false climate solution.

The World is Awash in Unregulated Carbon Offset Schemes. Hydropower Should Never Be in the Mix.

Many corporations and many members of the public are highly interested in making a difference fighting climate change by `offsetting` their carbon footprint. This interest is a large and growing business involving for-profit and non-profit organizations, large and small, local, national and international. Further complexifying the field is that there’s little authentic verification about what should count as a carbon offset, and there’s little-to-no regulation anywhere in the world right now watchdogging the carbon offset market.

In that void, hydropower companies — some which are private and for-profit, and others that are quasi-governmental — are selling carbon offsets to build and/or continue operating hydropower facilities. Because almost all hydropower emits greenhouse gases including methane, using hydropower as a carbon offset is not only a false climate solution, it greenwashes hydropower with `fake` carbon credits that actually make climate change worse.

We will start watchdogging some carbon offset companies and organizations, and calling attention to their greenwashing of hydropower. The business community and the public deserve to know that hydropower should never be used as a carbon offset, a carbon credit, or involved in a cap-and-trade carbon scheme.
