We are engaging with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to encourage them to increase their regulatory attention and scrutiny on the negative impacts of dams, especially on the greenhouse gas emissions caused by dams and reservoirs.
First, we are pleased that the EPA counted and reported GHG emissions to the UNFCC using IPCC guidelines in 2022 (see story here). Further, we are encouraging the EPA to refine its modeling to better count and report more emissions.
Second, we are pleased that the EPA is doing its own field research on the GHG emissions caused by dams and reservoirs in the U.S. (see EPA webpage here). We look forward to the results in 2024.
Finally, we are excited to have submitted a formal legal petition to the EPA to add dams and reservoirs to the EPA’s “Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program” that would require individual dam and reservoir owners/operators to count and report their own emissions. Our petition — supported by ~150 NGOs — is still pending before the EPA. You can read the petition by clicking the button below.
